Project Title
Constructing a Working Darkroom - this refers to an artifact based project. The outcome will be a home darkroom that I’ll have designed and fitted with the right features to allow me to produce a print of a photograph I will have taken. This title allows me to focus on darkroom photography in the particular area of print developing as I already have the skill and knowledge to take photos using analog techniques with a film camera. Yet, this project will allow me take my photography into a new area of self development.
Project Outcome

To research the processes involved in creating a darkroom for photography film development and then to successfully construct this to be able to produce a successful print is my aim in shorthand. In detail, my aim will have three key phases of research, plan and construction. I have little knowledge on darkroom photography beyond what I’ve seen in brief scenes in films such as 7even and The Secret Life of Walter Mitty. Therefore, a lot of my aim focuses on increasing my knowledge of how darkrooms work. After this, I aim to concentrate on the plan of darkroom. I’m predicting that before construction I will have to research/acquire equipment, room design and process. I must also be prepared for any problems that could arise in the running of my project as submitting my project before the deadline in December is up is key. The end goals of submitting a project that firstly fulfils the assessment objectives to the best of my ability, fulfils my own personal project aims, is handed in on time due to strong overall planning and enjoying my project are my overall aims.
The outcome will be the successful production of a print completed in the darkroom I’ll have constructed. In terms of being successful, I mean that it is a black and white print without any colour distortion as this would mean that my darkroom development process would be incorrect.
Project Aim
Is the title a question, a task or a brief?
A task
Is there an aim and outcome of the project?
Yes, I have the overall aims of submitting a project that firstly fulfils the assessment objectives to the best of my ability, fulfils my own personal project aims, is handed in on time due to strong overall planning and enjoying my project. With each progression of my project I’ll submit more specific aims as only after assessing past targets will I be able to move forward in the most efficient way for the future running of my project.
If this a completely new area of study/activity for the learner, does it allow development appropriate to the level?
I feel that although I have spent some time personally in the area of photography, I have never pursued techniques which aren’t purely digital. I haven’t before developed a print my hand which will be the new experience that surrounds my project.
If this is an extension of an area of experience/ study or part of an existing course, does it allow the learner to extend their skills beyond those already developed?
Picking up new skills will be a critical part of my project as I am following a task which is physical as well as mental. The actual process of construction of a darkroom as well as the developing processes which I’ll carry out will have to be self-taught. Before this though, I’ll have to develop my research skills by consulting not only secondary research but perhaps by using primary research too. Collecting this will be lead to development of new skills.
